Manchmal pfeift man sich dann doch einen Bestseller rein. Eigentlich nur, um zu sehen, wie weit der eigene Lesegeschmack noch immer vom Mainstream entfernt ist. Allerdings: Where the Crawdads Sing ist ein richtig gut geschriebener Roman. LeserInnen, die ne harte Kindheit hatten, werden sich von Mrs Owens ziemlich gut verstanden fühlen und die Hauptfigur sofort im Herzen adoptieren. Die mit einer guten Kindheit werden am Ende wissen, was es heißt, gegen Gewalt und Einsamkeit und Hunger anzuüberleben. Und Naturbeschreibungen kann die Autorin mindestens so gut wie ihr Kollege Faulkner. Insgesamt ein großartiges Buch mit der klitzekleinen Einschränkung, dass für meinen Geschmack das Ende zu weit auserzählt wurde. Ein Kapitel weniger wäre deutlich mehr gewesen. Aber, egal, ist trotzdem ein empfehlenswerter Roman.

Wow! Where the Crawdads Sing is truly a remarkable achievement. It is beautifully written and includes several poems that *spoiler* were written by the protagonist Kya under the pen name Amanda Hamilton.Kya’s life is marked by abandonment, loneliness and social exclusion after her mother, brothers, sisters and finally, her abusive father leave her all to herself in a rusty shack in the marsh when she is only a kid. Nevertheless, the famous Marsh Girl’s resilience is unshakeable and eventually, leads her to become an accomplished author and biologist.I especially like the relationship between Kya and Jumping who became a sort of surrogate father to her and his wife Mabel.The only weak spot for me was the plot twist that Kya did, in fact, kill Chase and that this was only revealed to the reader on the last two pages via a poem of hers read by Tate. This felt like a last-minute addition to me and I would’ve preferred if it were left unsolved so as to keep us guessing.
